Winter will brighten for Te Anau residents and visitors at the end of June as lights take over town buildings and fill the streets.
The annual Te Anau Winter Illuminations will begin in the town centre on 27 June 2014 as the Fiordland town lights up for the month. The festival celebrates the "turning on of the lights" which happened in winter 1958, when residents of Te Anau were able to turn on electric lights for the first time. These days the whole town is festooned in beautiful lights, just like an English Christmas.
Event organiser Jan Ludemann said the aim was to bring a bit of joy to the community over the darkest month of the year.
