Te Anau Glow Worm Caves in Fiordland

For many years, these caves were lost in legend. Their presence was only hinted at by the ancient Maori name for the area, Te Ana-au, which means 'caves of swirling water'. They remained hidden until their rediscovery by explorer Lawson Burrows in 1948.

Hidden beneath the mountains on Lake Te Anau's western shores, is an underground network of caves lit by thousands of glow worms - a must see for anyone visiting Fiordland.

This underground world is stunningly beautiful. The caves are geologically young (12,000 years old), and are still being carved out by the river that flows through them. The result is a twisting network of limestone passages, filled with sculpted rock, whirlpools, and a roaring underground waterfall.

A visit to these caves is a fascinating half day trip. Regular, guided excursions are operated daily, by Real Journeys, and depart from their lakefront base, situated directly across the road from Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas.

The tour begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau, on board their modern vessel Luminosa. After disembarking on the western shores, a guide will take you through the caves in small groups - up to 14 people by path and small boat.

It is not possible to drive to the caves. The trip is suitable for all ages, except infants. Some agility is required to bend through the low cave entrance, and steps are involved. Photography and filming are not permitted inside the cave.
